Songkran in Pattaya: the complete guide

Pattaya celebrates Thailand's biggest festival harder, longer, and wetter than anywhere else in the country. This is what you need to know.

When it happens

National Songkran is April 13–15. Pattaya extends it: the city's Wan Lai — its own version of Songkran — runs April 17–19, with the biggest day on April 19 (Wan Lai Naklua, in particular, packs out). So in practice, expect water battles April 12 through April 19+.

Where to go

LocationVibe
Beach RoadPattaya's main parade route. Floats, foam, full mayhem. Closes to traffic afternoons.
Walking StreetBars and clubs participate. Wet from open-til-close. Bring waterproof bag.
Naklua (Wan Lai day)Locally focused, traditional in the morning, hugely wet by afternoon. April 19.
JomtienQuieter, family-friendlier than Beach Rd. Still wet.

What to bring

What to expect

People will throw water on you. People will smear chalk-water (din so phong) on your face — this is traditional, not aggression. Beer is everywhere. Music stages are everywhere. Police presence is heavy but tolerant; nothing is genuinely unsafe if you stay sensible.

How it differs from Bangkok

Bangkok's Songkran is contained mostly to Khao San / RCA / Silom. Pattaya's covers the entire beachfront and the city is more committed — businesses close or run wet-themed events; the whole tourist economy aligns with the festival. Wan Lai (April 19) is unique to Pattaya and a working-day visitor highlight if you can be here.
